As a result of not needing the humidifier, compressor and radiator as in the LTPEM system, the HTPEM system is built using a very simple internal architecture reducing the Balance Of Plants (BOP) cost to approximately 25% of the fuel cell stack cost.
This is achieved by eliminating a number of traditionally used components such as humidifiers, pumps, compressors and radiators. The fuel cell itself only requires a single air-fan, similar to those used to cool CPUs in computers. For LTPEM fuel cell BOP components may cost up to 200% of fuel cell stack costs.
